Woodwardia-fimbriata, commonly known as giant chain fern or giant lady fern, is a species of large fern native to western North America.
Giant chain ferns can grow up to 180cm in height, with fronds that are pinnate, meaning they have a feather-like appearance. The fronds are mid green and have a graceful, arching form. Each frond consists of multiple leaflets that are narrow and pointed.
This fern prefers damp, shady habitats such as forests, stream banks, and ravines. It can tolerate a range of soil types, from sandy to loamy.
Giant chain ferns reproduce through spores, which are produced in structures called sporangia on the undersides of the fronds. The spores are released into the air and can germinate under favourable conditions to form new ferns.
In landscaping, Woodwardia-fimbriata can be used to create a striking focal point in shaded gardens.
