Allium hollandicum ‘Purple Sensation’ is a bulbous perennial which bears large globes which are made up of deep-purple, star-shaped flowers June to July. The flowers sit on sturdy stems approximately 90 cm above a neat clump of long glossy grey-green, strap-shaped leaves. The foliage has a strong onion scent, but often withers before the flowering period. Generally, ‘Purple Sensation’ attracts lots of pollinators. Creates a wonderful display if planted in masses. It reaches a maximum average height of 90 cm, spread 20 cm. It is excellent as a cut flower in either fresh or dried arrangements! This plant has been awarded The RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM)
Suggested Care: Allium hollandicum ‘Purple Sensation’ should be planted in gritty, well-drained soils, positioned in a sunny position. Once the flowers begin to die off, you should cut them back to preserve the bulbs. If self-seeding is undesired, you should cut back the flowering stems once the flowers had become discoloured. This variety of Allium is drought tolerant.
Planting Instructions: Break up the soil well before planting and dig a hole twice the size of the pot. Remove plant from the pot by tapping the rim of the pot in ‘up side down’ position. Do not pull the plant from the pot. Firm soil after planting and water regularly for the first month.
