Athyrium ‘Red Beauty’ is a striking, unique deciduous fern which forms a broad, pretty rosette of lacy, arching fronds which emerge green, but often develop a silver/grey colouring with a contrasting bright burgundy flush to the burgundy/purple stems and midribs. Its intense colouring can take up to 3 years to develop. This is the perfect fern to add to the garden as it is quite easy to grow. When mature, this plant can reach a maximum mature height of 30 cm and spread of 50 cm. It is a versatile plant, which is perfect for use in under-planting, beds, or woodlands. A true show-stopper in borders or as a groundcover.
Suggested Care: Athyrium ‘Red Beauty’ should be planted in very fertile soils which are moist but well-drained, positioned in a partial or fully shaded area. It will tolerate full sun if constant moisture is provided. It is important that you do not let the soils dry out however, this cultivar can withstand dryer soils than others. Dead or damaged fronds may be removed as necessary but typically this plant dies back in the winter itself. Propagate by sowing spores in mid to late summer (cultivars may not come true) or by division in spring. The perfect plant as it is generally pest and disease free!
Planting Instructions: Break up the soil well before planting and dig a hole twice the size of the pot. Remove plant from the pot by tapping the rim of the pot in ‘up side down’ position. However, do not pull the plant from the pot. Firm soil after planting and water regularly for the first month.
