Description

Basil ‘Sweet’ is a tender, culinary, perennial herb with large aromatic, bright green leaves which are wonderfully aromatic. It also produces whorled tubular, pink-tinged flowers in summer. However, the flowers are not the reason this plant is sought after, but it is its stunning edible foliage which is used in food and drinks. It is perfect for use in salads, pasta, tomato or egg dishes. Additionally, it can be used to make a herb pesto. This plant can be grown in containers, herb gardens or greenhouses, but it is best grown indoors as it is quite tender. It can reach a maximum mature height and spread of 60 cm.

Suggested Care: Basil ‘Sweet’ should be grown in well-drained, fertile soil, in a sheltered position in full sun. It is a very tender plant, growing indoors is advised. Water freely in the summer. To prune, pinch out flower heads as they appear to ensure continued leaf growth. If left to flower, cut back after flowering.

Planting Instructions: Break up the soil well before planting and dig a hole twice the size of the pot. Remove plant from the pot by tapping the rim of the pot in ‘up side down’ position. However, do not pull the plant from the pot. Firm soil after planting and water regularly for the first month.
