Miscanthus sinensis ‘Ferner Osten’ is a compact, deciduous, ornamental grass with a clump-forming habit. The narrow, arching leaves are green with a single, narrow, vertical white stripe which turn dull orange in autumn and early winter. Amazing, feathery, deep red plumes rise above the foliage in late summer eventually turning pink, then silver as autumn progresses. Can reach a maximum mature height of 150 cm and can approximately spread up to 100 cm. Perfect in beds, borders, or as a feature plant in a garden. This plant has been awarded The RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
Suggested Care: Miscanthus sinensis ‘Ferner Osten’ is suitable for well-drained soil in a sunny position but it will tolerate partial shade. Mulch grasses with organic material in the autumn to protect roots and shoots from freezing. Once shoots begin to re-appear in spring, we suggest to cut them back to about 10cm, giving the plant a rejuvenating lease of life. Can be divided in early spring once maturity is established. Protect from excessive winter wet.
Planting Instructions: Break up the soil well before planting and dig a hole twice the size of the pot. Remove plant from the pot by tapping the rim of the pot in ‘up side down’ position. Do not pull the plant from the pot. Firm soil after planting and water regularly for the first month. As this is a tall variety, you should leave space between other plants.
