Description

Alcea rosea ‘Nigra’ – Dramatic Dark-Flowering Hollyhock

Alcea rosea ‘Nigra’ produces tall, sturdy stems adorned with striking deep maroon to almost black flowers that bloom from midsummer into early autumn. Its bold, dramatic flowers create a strong vertical accent in borders, cottage gardens, or against fences and walls.

This variety thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and attracts bees and pollinators, enhancing garden wildlife. Reaching up to 2–2.5 m in height with a spread of 45–60 cm, ‘Nigra’ adds height, colour contrast, and classic cottage-garden charm to any sunny garden space.

Suggested Care: Alcea rosea ‘Nigra’ should be planted in moist but well-drained soil, positioned in full sun. It can withstand moist soil types but must be protected from winter wet. In hotter climates, it should be planted in partial shade to prevent damage to the leaves. Cut back after the flowering period.

Planting Instructions: Break up the soil well before planting and dig a hole twice the size of the pot. Remove plant from the pot by tapping the rim of the pot in ‘up-side down’ position. Do not pull the plant from the pot. Firm soil after planting and water regularly for the first month.
