Description

Astrantia major ‘Venice’ is a gorgeous herbaceous perennial, with deeply divided, palmate, dark green leaves. In early summer, tall stems bear umbels of deep, ruby-red flowers which are surrounded by very deep red/purple bracts. These flowers resemble a pincushion. This Astrantia can reach a maximum height of 50 cm and spread of 30 cm. This truly spectacular plant will produce hundreds of long-lasting blooms in July right up until late September. It is perfect for use in borders, as a cut flower or as a pollinator plant as it attracts bees and butterflies.

Suggested Care: Astrantia major ‘Venice’ should be planted in moist but well-drained soil, positioned in full sun. It should be planted in a spot sheltered from harsh winds. This plant can also withstand partially shaded areas however, a sunny position gives the best foliage colour. If self-seeding is undesired, you should deadhead the flowers before the seed is ripe. Cutting back the spent flowers may also encourage a second flush of growth.

Planting Instructions: Break up the soil well before planting and dig a hole twice the size of the pot. Remove plant from the pot by tapping the rim of the pot in ‘up side down’ position. However, do not pull the plant from the pot. Firm soil after planting and water regularly for the first month.
