Polystichum-setiferum-‘Congestum’, also commonly known as Dwarf Soft Shield Fern or Woolly Fern, is a compact fern variety that is native to Western Europe. It is a deciduous fern, meaning it sheds its fronds in colder months and regrows them in spring.
The foliage of Polystichum setiferum ‘Congestum’ consists of finely divided, dark green fronds that emerge in a shuttlecock shape. The fronds are known for their soft, woolly appearance, which adds visual interest to gardens and landscapes. The fronds can reach a height of about 40cm and a spread of 50cm.
This fern variety prefers partial to full shade and thrives in well-draining, acidic soil. It is relatively low-maintenance and can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions. Regular watering is necessary to keep the soil consistently moist, but it should not be waterlogged.
Polystichum-setiferum-‘Congestum’ is commonly used in woodland gardens, shady borders, and rock gardens. It is also suitable for planting in containers. With its compact size and attractive foliage, it provides a lush and textural element to landscapes.
