Description

Allium atropurpureum is a striking, medium-height ornamental onion known for its dense, spherical clusters of deep reddish-purple, star-shaped flowers that appear from May to June. The blooms are carried on sturdy stems around 80–100 cm tall, rising gracefully above clumps of strap-shaped, mid-green leaves. The foliage has a light onion scent and complements the rich flower colour beautifully.

The long-lasting blooms attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. Perfect for planting in groups or drifts, it creates a dramatic and elegant display in borders, gravel gardens, or architectural planting schemes. The flowers also make excellent cut flowers, both fresh and dried, adding texture and colour to floral arrangements.

Suggested Care:
Plant Allium atropurpureum in gritty, well-drained soil and a sunny position for best results. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering to replenish the bulb for the following year. Remove faded flower heads if self-seeding is not desired. This variety is drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, and thrives when planted in bold groups among perennials or ornamental grasses.

Planting Instructions: Break up the soil well before planting and dig a hole twice the size of the pot. Remove plant from the pot by tapping the rim of the pot in ‘up side down’ position. Do not pull the plant from the pot. Firm soil after planting and water regularly for the first month.
